We, The Branded

Did the following thought ever occur to you?

“I am one of the intelligent ones. Advertising has no effect on me.”

Let me guess: you also own a bookshelf with over 100 books and a laptop that sits in the same room.

Did you know books were toxic?

Have you ever burned a book?

I don’t have to spell out the imagery associated with book burning. My guess though is that 99.99% of people make the exact same mental association when thinking about burning books. Most of the academics I know hold a belief that their spines will twist by even thinking about such blasphemy.

Books, like religion, are marketed beautifully.

Myth: You are a Nazi if you burn books.

Fact: Modern wood stoves are one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly forms of house heating!

Myth: You need to keep books once you have read them, for reference purposes.

Fact: 98% of information is available online, plus a myriad of work that is not published in books. By the time you get up, walk to the bookshelf and find the book, most web-savvy people could have already found the information on The Google.

Myth: Books have more value the longer you keep them.

Fact: The early edition copy of “The Tale of Two Cities” would only fetch me $17. This was handed to me as an heirloom that I was told to take very good care of. My ten inch thick pile of hockey cards, which included about 5 Wayne Gretzky rookie cards, ended up in the garbage. My six million dollar man lunch box and thermos, which also ended up in the trash can be found on Ebay for $129.99

It’s really nice though to be one of the smart people with a fancy-lernin’ degree. I’m certainly glad advertising, marketing and branding has no effect on me.

;)
